Situated on the edge of the popular town of Wirksworth on the edge of the White Peak, this unique house was built in 1791 as a place where the local Justice of the Peace sent able bodied idlers and the unemployed to be put to work. Following law changes in the 19th century, the house was converted into alms houses with four front doors added and the house extended. In 1986, after a period of dereliction, it became a Grade II listed building, and was lovingly and sympathetically restored into a single home, retaining many original features including exposed stone walls and beams. With its own garden, enclosed courtyard and paddock, it now provides the ideal holiday base for visiting the Peak District. Boasting super views over the local countryside, there are super walks from the door with cycling, climbing and canoeing within a 4 mile radius. Within a 10 minute drive, you will find Carsington Water with its water sports and bird watching, World Heritage Site in the Derwent Valley with the Massson and Cromford Mills, the High Peak Trail, a disused railway line now a cycleway and bridle path. Within a half hour drive, you can visit the towns of Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne along with Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. A must for the family is Alton Towers and American Adventure whilst the Tramway Village at Crich provides an interesting day out.
