There is also an enclosed garden with decked terrace. The southern Lake District offers a spectacular choice of activities from watersports to mountain climbing, cycling and walking. Magnificent scenery surrounds visitors in every direction and there are many cultural events throughout the year around the lakes and at the historic castles, houses and gardens which abound in this area. The nearby village of Lakeside, 1&frac12; miles, is home to the Aquarium of the Lakes and the Lakeside to Haverthwaite Steam Railway - a great favourite with families and train enthusiasts. Bowness-on-Windermere, 7 miles, is a vibrant village with stylish boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, museums and the Beatrix Potter Exhibition. From here there is also a small car ferry across the lake to Sawrey, Hawkshead, the Grizedale Forest and Coniston, and the tourist boats for trips to Ambleside or a leisurely scenic excursion around the islands.
