Fishing trips are available from the harbourside and there is a 3 mile stretch of beach to Sandsend. Places of special interest include Captain Cook’s museum, the 199 steps leading to St Mary’s Church and the abbey ruins, and Pannet Park Museum. The nearby coastal villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, built into the cliffs and renowned as a smugglers haunt, and Runswick Bay are well worth a visit; whilst the larger resort of Scarborough, 20 miles, offers excellent theatre, the Sea Life Centre, and Water Scene swimming pool. Inland, the glorious North York Moors offer excellent walking and wildlife. North York Moors steam railway from Grosmont, 6 miles. Esk Valley railway from Whitby. Cliff top golf course 2 miles.
