Between Penrith (15 miles) and Ambleside (12 miles), you are surrounded by majestic Lakeland scenery. The poet Wordsworth bought the land on which Broad How now stands, thinking it the perfect place to build a house, though he never did. It stands in an acre of garden with lawns, shrubs and a wild area behind. Both the house and garden are family friendly, with toys, books, maps and guides. Patterdale lies on the coast to coast path and is an excellent centre for fell and valley walking. Broad How is half a mile from Lake Ullswater with its steamer service (April to October), sailing, rowing, swimming and fishing.
